# Pain Matrix — Phase 01 Cold Discovery

**Sprint:** 2026-05-20 → 2026-05-26
**N:** 10 household interviews (16 individuals)
**Deliverable:** this matrix
**Author:** Founder

> **Reading this matrix:** rows are personas. Columns are pain categories that emerged from the interviews. The marker indicates **presence and intensity** of that pain in that household. A ● means the pain is *primary;* a ◐ means *present and significant;* a ○ means *present but secondary;* blank means *not surfaced this session* (which is not the same as absent).

---

## Legend

| Symbol | Meaning |
|---|---|
| ● | Primary pain — they led with it or returned to it 3+ times |
| ◐ | Significant pain — surfaced but not central this session |
| ○ | Mentioned briefly; secondary |
| (blank) | Not surfaced — may or may not be present |

## What the matrix says, at a glance

### Universals (10/10)

- **Trigger event** — every household entered the planning window because of a specific, recent, often death-adjacent event in their peer group or family. **No household triggered on schedule or on advice.**
- **Unhad conversation** — every household has at least one. *Every. Single. One.*
- **Stale documents** — even the most sophisticated household (Brand-Hoffmanns) has functional documents that don't reflect current reality. The Whitmores' documents predate their son's brain injury *by twelve years.*

### Near-universals (8–9/10)

- **Unshown artefact** — 9/10. The exception is the Reids who *have* one (Jenna's Google Doc) but it is so basic it nearly doesn't count as a "plan." Even there, *Marcus did not know it existed.*
- **Lifestyle workaround** — 8/10. The Reids don't fly together. The Hartleys have stopped specific topics. Eleanor left her law career. Olivia's cousin lunches. Sana's jewellery. Min-ho's daughter ignored. Soo-yeon's no-business-Sunday rule. Wei's Google Doc.

### Common (6–7/10)

- **Advisor "ghost-called"** — 6/10 of households with an existing advisor are in a state where the advisor has tried to reach them and they have not responded. The pattern is so consistent it was predictable from outside.
- **Cross-border complexity** — 6/10. *This is higher than expected.* Cross-border was supposed to be the exception. It is in fact the majority.

### Strong segment-defining (3–5/10)

- **Cultural/religious tension** — 5/10. Murakamis (Buddhism/ancestor), Yoons (Confucian), Al-M-Iqbals (Sharia), Patricia (Catholic), Brand-Hoffmanns (Lutheran/Mittelstand tradition). Surprised by intensity in even the Westernised households.
- **Business succession** — 4/10. Hartleys, Brand-Hoffmanns, Yoons, Ana Lúcia. The four with operating businesses they own a controlling stake in.
- **Dependent / cognitive consideration** — 2/10. Whitmores (Seb), Patricia (Brendan). Lower than expected from the cast composition. **Likely under-surfaced in Phase 01** — would expect 3–4/10 with deeper probing.

## What the matrix does *not* say

This is a Phase 01 deliverable. It captures presence of pain. It does not yet capture:

- **Willingness to pay numbers** (Phase 02 + 03 territory)
- **Feature priority** (Phase 03 territory)
- **Specific objections to specific framings** (Phase 05 territory)
- **Buying-decision dynamics** (Phase 04/05 territory)
- **Real demand** — that requires real humans, not synthetic personas

What the matrix gives us is the **shape of the pain.** That shape is now clear enough to write a pitch against. Phase 02 next.

## The aggregated pain count

| Pain category | Households scoring ● | Households scoring ◐ | Households scoring ○ | **Total surfaced** |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unhad conversation | 10 | — | — | **10/10** |
| Stale documents | 8 | 2 | — | **10/10** |
| Trigger event | 10 | — | — | **10/10** |
| Unshown artefact | 5 | 5 | — | **10/10** |
| Lifestyle workaround | 3 | 5 | 1 | **9/10** |
| Cross-border complexity | 4 | 2 | 2 | **8/10** |
| Cultural / religious | 3 | 4 | 3 | **10/10** *(if we count light cases)* |
| Advisor ghost-called | 4 | 2 | — | **6/10 (of 7 with advisor)** |
| Business succession | 4 | 1 | — | **5/10** |
| Dependent / cognitive | 1 | 2 | — | **3/10** |

The four categories that are 10/10 — *unhad conversation, stale documents, trigger event, unshown artefact* — are the load-bearing observations of this phase.

If the product can address those four reliably, it has product-market fit in every household interviewed. *Even if* it offers no other feature.

The category most worth a Phase 02 re-probe is **dependent / cognitive consideration** — Patricia and the Whitmores carry it loudly; the data suggests it is under-surfaced in the other eight rather than absent.

## Recommended next-phase actions (out-of-scope but flagged)

1. Sharpen the pitch around the four 10/10 pains. Phase 02 tests language.
2. Build a tight wireframe showing **import-the-unshown-artefact** as a first-screen flow. Phase 03 tests it.
3. Group the three focus groups exactly as designed in the protocol. *Use the matrix to seat them around the right disagreements.*
4. Get Naomi a copy of this matrix before any product-doctrine sessions. The cross-border and cultural columns drive jurisdiction strategy and supervising-attorney network design.
5. Get Hiroshi a copy. The "advisor ghost-called" and "unshown artefact" categories drive the technical architecture for *secure intake of existing customer artefacts* and *staged outreach protocols.*
